EcoFlow Smart Home Panel 3 Not Reading Solar Correctly? Here’s What We Found (ECOFLOW CTs 200A)

A homeowner recently contacted Sundown Offgrid because their EcoFlow Smart Home Panel 3 wasn't operating the way they expected.
The home already had approximately 5 kW of rooftop solar, along with EcoFlow battery storage.
Everything appeared to be working—but the energy flow didn't make sense.
The EcoFlow system was not properly distinguishing the home's existing rooftop solar production from grid power. In the app, solar and grid energy appeared to be mixed together, making it difficult for the system and homeowner to accurately understand where the home's energy was coming from.
More importantly, the homeowner wasn't seeing the savings they expected.
Instead of maximizing available solar energy and using the batteries to reduce grid consumption, the system was still relying on utility power in ways that weren't expected. The homeowner was ultimately buying more energy from the grid than they intended, which showed up on the electric bill.
The Solar Was Working. The Ecoflow Batteries Were Working. So What Was Missing?
After previous troubleshooting hadn't resolved the problem, Sundown Offgrid was brought in to evaluate the complete system.
We found an important missing piece:
External CTs.
CTs—or Current Transformers—allow the EcoFlow system to measure power flowing through specific conductors.
In simple terms, the Smart Home Panel needed better visibility into what the existing rooftop solar system was actually producing.
Without that information, the energy-management picture wasn't complete.
We Installed the External CTs
Once the external CTs were installed and properly configured, the Smart Home Panel 3 could better recognize the home's existing rooftop solar production separately from utility power.
That gave us a much clearer picture of:

🏠 Home consumption
🔋 Battery charging and discharging
⚡ Utility grid usage
Now the energy-flow information actually reflected what was happening at the home.
Why Did This Matter for the Electric Bill?
This wasn't simply about making the EcoFlow app look correct.
The homeowner's goal was to use more of their own solar energy and purchase less electricity from the utility.
Before correcting the system, the energy-management behavior wasn't accomplishing that goal. Solar was available, but the batteries weren't charging and operating as expected, while the home continued relying on grid energy.
That defeats one of the major reasons for installing solar and battery storage in the first place.
After correcting the CT measurement and reviewing the system configuration, the homeowner could finally see how solar, battery, home loads, and the grid were interacting—and the system could be configured around the actual goal:
Use the solar first. Store available energy. Minimize unnecessary grid consumption.
A Battery System Is Only as Good as Its Configuration
This case is a great example of something we see more often as homes combine equipment from different manufacturers.
You can have:
Existing Rooftop Solar + EcoFlow Smart Home Panel 3 + Batteries + Utility Grid
and every individual component may be operational.
But that doesn't necessarily mean the entire system is working together correctly.
Installation is only part of the job.
Commissioning, CT placement, monitoring, and energy-management settings matter too.
